about

"YCAL Mix" (1990-1995) was part of a long-term collaboration with Yeast Culture, from Seattle. For our project, we had a rule that we had to be a material exchange as well as a sound exchange. The material consisted of an article of clothing to produce sound with. When I moved to a new house, I somehow lost the box that contained that article of clothing, but I still have the reel to reel tapes. In 1990, I recorded "YCAL", which stands for Yeast Culture Assemblage Loops because it uses sound material recorded by Yeast Culture for his track on the "Assemblage" compilation 7" from 1989, after I wrote a very long score for it on a computer. That score is lost too, but I recall that it had to do with the length of loops and the time that each was to be on the four-track. The project was shelved until April 1995, when I had access to a four-track again and mixed the tape down onto DAT, which is the version on this CD. Regard it as my version of Cage's "Mozart Mix".

Former label for experimental-type music. Foolishly founded by Howard Stelzer in 1997, mismanaged for more years than necessary, and finally put out of its misery in 2012. This page exists to keep some titles available.
